MILITARY STANDARDS
Roman military standards were important visual aspects of an army. The standards were poles topped with some type of sign or symbol. Different standards represented certain units of a Roman legion.
Purpose: The military standards were an important part of a Roman legion. The standards were used for several different purposes. One of the standard's purposes was to identify different units within a legion. Each legion had a specific standard and could be identified quickly and easily by their standard. The standards were also carried so soldiers could easily locate their legion, even during the chaos of a battle. A legion would also use their standard to strike camp. The first thing the army would do was stake the pole of the standard into the ground where they would build their campsite. The final purpose of having military standards was to show honor to each legion and to Rome itself.
