The Aquila was the most famous Roman military standard. It was seen as the most important standard because it was the symbol of the legion. The designated person to carry this standard was called the “Aquilifer.” Since the Aquila was the most important standard, so was the bearer and they wore the lion headdress. The Aquilifer would carry the standard at the front of the marching formation. The Aquila consisted of a laurel crown surrounding the raised wings of a gold or silver eagle. The eagles was planted on a trapezoidal base with lightning bolts attached to the sides. If a legion were to lose their Aquila, it was seen as a disgrace and a catastrophe.
