The Imago
Each legion had an Imago that was carried at the front of the formation. The Imago was for the entire legion, but it was taken care of by the first cohort, which is a unit within a legion. The person that carried the Imago was called the "Imagnifer." The Imago was a three-dimensional portrait representation of the current emperor or the emperor that formed that specific legion. This standard was important because it represented the legions honor and loyalty to this emperor. The legion and the emperor were linked through this standard and it contained a type of political importance.
